Tragedy on I-71: Teacher Micaela Pedicone, 28, and Darnell McKinney Jr., 49, Killed in Fatal Head-On Collision

WARREN COUNTY, Ohio — A tragic crash on Interstate 71 Monday afternoon claimed the lives of Micaela Pedicone, 28, and Darnell McKinney Jr., 49, leaving families, friends, and the wider community grieving a devastating and sudden loss.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Lebanon Post, the crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m. at mile marker 26 on I-71 northbound in Union Township. Investigators said Micaela Pedicone was driving southbound when her vehicle crossed the median, entered the northbound lanes, and struck Darnell McKinney Jr.’s vehicle head-on.

Troopers confirmed that Pedicone and McKinney were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, underscoring the severity of the collision and the tragic circumstances surrounding the incident.

The loss of Micaela Pedicone has been felt deeply within the local education community. The Kings Local School District confirmed that Pedicone was a teacher at South Lebanon Elementary School, where she was known for her dedication and care for her students and colleagues.

“Micaela was a valued member of our school community who cared deeply for her students and colleagues,” the district said in a statement. “Her loss is felt profoundly across our district.”

In response to the tragedy, the district announced that South Lebanon Elementary School would be closed on Tuesday, and grief counselors would be available on site to support students, staff, and families during this difficult time.

The death of Darnell McKinney Jr., 49, has also left loved ones mourning the loss of a life taken far too soon. Family members and friends are remembering him as a cherished individual whose absence will be deeply felt by those who knew and loved him.

Following the crash, a portion of I-71 northbound near Kings Mill was shut down for approximately two hours, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, as emergency crews worked the scene and investigators gathered evidence.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details have been released at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
