With heavy hearts, we pause to remember and honor the lives of William Johns Jr., Ellen Siakotos, and Violet Wells, three individuals whose lives were tragically lost amid the recent winter storm and dangerously cold temperatures affecting the community. Their passing serves as a somber reminder of how unforgiving severe winter weather can be and how deeply it can impact families, neighbors, and an entire community.
According to the Marion County Coroner, all three deaths are believed to be connected to the extreme conditions brought on by the storm. While the cause and manner of death remain pending as full forensic examinations continue, the circumstances surrounding each loss are heartbreaking and deeply felt.
On January 24, 61-year-old William Johns Jr. was found deceased inside his home, where there was reportedly no heat. That same day, 69-year-old Ellen Siakotos was also found dead in her residence. Early information suggests she may have died from hypothermia, though final determinations are still forthcoming. Just two days later, on January 26, 59-year-old Violet Wells was discovered outside her home, with a snow shovel nearby, suggesting she may have been trying to clear snow during the brutal cold when tragedy struck.
Beyond these details, these were real people—lives that mattered. William, Ellen, and Violet were each someone’s family, someone’s neighbor, someone’s friend. Their absence leaves a quiet but profound ache, and their memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
As the community mourns, this moment also calls for compassion and vigilance. Extreme winter weather can be especially dangerous for the elderly, those living alone, and anyone without adequate heating. Please continue to check on neighbors, family members, and loved ones. A simple gesture—making a phone call, knocking on a door, or offering help—can truly save a life.
Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of William Johns Jr., Ellen Siakotos, and Violet Wells during this incredibly difficult time. May their memories be honored, their lives remembered, and their passing remind us to look out for one another, especially in moments of hardship.
Rest in peace. You are remembered, you are missed, and you will not be forgotten.
