With deep sorrow, the Providence community mourns the tragic loss of Romy Alfonso, a 51-year-old man whose life was taken following a violent assault on Manton Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island. According to Providence police, officers were called to Manton Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Monday after reports of an assault. When they arrived, they found Romy Alfonso critically injured. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where medical staff worked tirelessly to save his life. Despite their efforts, Romy later succumbed to his injuries. His death was confirmed Friday by Providence Police Colonel Oscar Perez.
Investigators say witnesses described a disturbing scene. Romy was allegedly attacked by multiple juveniles, knocked to the ground, and repeatedly struck. The violence, sudden and overwhelming, left him defenseless. The details of the incident have deeply unsettled residents, not only because of the brutality involved, but because of the young ages of those accused.
Police report that four juveniles—three 12-year-olds and one 11-year-old—were taken into custody later that same day. Authorities stated that three of the juveniles were initially detained in connection with a separate disturbance before investigators connected them to the assault on Romy. All four juveniles have since been charged with felony assault and conspiracy and are currently being held at the Rhode Island Training School.
