A deep sense of grief surrounds the Birmingham community following a tragic and devastating crash on Sunday along U.S. 280 that claimed the life of Morgan Lakesha Hawkins, a beloved 27-year-old woman whose life was taken far too soon.
Authorities with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified Morgan as the victim of the horrific crash. According to officials, the vehicle she was traveling in was headed westbound when it suddenly lost control and struck the median guardrail on the passenger side. The force of the impact was so severe that both occupants became trapped inside the vehicle, and the guardrail was pushed into two eastbound lanes, shutting down the roadway for several hours as first responders worked tirelessly at the scene.
Morgan, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was pronounced deceased at the scene at 1:45 p.m. The driver, whose name has not been released, suffered significant injuries and was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment.
First responders from the Rocky Ridge Fire District, Mountain Brook Fire and Police Departments, and Alabama State Troopers all responded to the scene, providing aid and securing the area. The crash remains under investigation by Mountain Brook Police.
Beyond the details of the accident lies an immeasurable loss. Morgan Lakesha Hawkins was more than a name in a report—she was a daughter, a friend, a loved one, and a bright presence in the lives of so many. At just 27 years old, she had her whole life ahead of her, filled with dreams yet to be realized, memories yet to be made, and love yet to be shared.
Those who knew Morgan remember her for her spirit, her warmth, and the way she touched the hearts of those around her. Her smile, laughter, and kindness will forever live on in the memories of her family and friends. Though her time on this earth was heartbreakingly short, the impact she made will never fade.
As the community mourns this tragic loss, we ask for prayers, love, and strength for Morgan’s family and all who are grieving her passing. May they find comfort in shared memories, peace in knowing she was deeply loved, and support from those standing beside them during this unimaginably difficult time.
Rest in peace, Morgan Lakesha Hawkins. You will always be remembered, forever loved, and never forgotten.
