PHOENIX — With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the community mourns the loss of 8-year-old Maleeka Boone, whose disappearance and tragic passing have left an indelible mark on her family, loved ones, and all who followed the search for her safe return. What began as a desperate plea to find a missing child ended in heartbreak, according to the Navajo Police Department.
Maleeka was last seen on the evening of Jan. 15, at approximately 6:00 p.m., walking on foot near Cedar Loop in the Coalmine NHA housing area in Coalmine. When she failed to return home, her family immediately knew something was wrong. Loved ones shared that it was completely out of character for Maleeka to be gone for any extended period of time, prompting growing concern for her safety and well-being.
In a statement released on Jan. 16, authorities confirmed that Maleeka’s family feared for her welfare, a concern that resonated deeply throughout the community. As news of her disappearance spread, hope remained strong that she would be found safe. Community members, volunteers, and law enforcement alike held onto that hope as search efforts intensified.
An extensive, multi-agency operation was launched, led by the Navajo Police Department’s Tuba City District. Numerous agencies joined forces in the effort, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety, U.S. Marshals Service Missing Persons Unit, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Navajo Criminal Investigation. Search teams focused heavily on the Coalmine Canyon area, navigating rugged terrain and difficult conditions in a race against time.
Law enforcement presence was visible throughout the area as ground searches, coordination efforts, and investigative actions continued around the clock. Despite the scale and urgency of the response, the search ultimately came to a tragic conclusion, devastating all who had prayed for a different outcome.
Authorities have stated that key details surrounding Maleeka’s disappearance — including the exact circumstances of when and how she was last seen — remain under active investigation. Out of respect for the process and the family, officials have not released further specifics at this time.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Navajo Police announced that the Coalmine area would remain on lockdown until further notice. Residents were asked to stay within their home areas while law enforcement continues investigative work in the community.
“All residents will be asked to remain within their home area, as law enforcement conduct further investigation,” officials said in a social media post.
Maleeka Boone’s passing has sent waves of grief through the community and far beyond. She is remembered as a child whose life was just beginning — a little girl whose smile, laughter, and presence meant everything to those who loved her. Her loss is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be and how deeply a single child can touch an entire community.
As family, friends, and neighbors grieve, they also seek answers, healing, and justice. Authorities say updates will be provided as more information becomes available and urge anyone with information related to the case to contact the Navajo Police Department.
Today, and in the days to come, Maleeka Boone is remembered with love, sorrow, and compassion. May her memory live on in the hearts of all who cared for her, and may her family find strength and comfort as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
