The Urbana and Champaign communities are mourning the tragic and untimely loss of Benancio Crowley, a 52-year-old man from Champaign, whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence early Friday morning. His passing has left family, friends, and neighbors grieving, while a once-quiet neighborhood now carries the weight of unanswered questions and profound sorrow.
According to authorities, Urbana Police responded at approximately 1:48 a.m. to reports of a shooting with injuries in the 1200 block of Ellis Drive. When officers arrived, they found Benancio suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Carle Foundation Hospital, where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased at 2:56 a.m., as confirmed by Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Benancio was more than a name in a police report. He was a son, a friend, and a member of a community that will forever feel his absence. Those who knew him remember a man whose presence mattered—someone whose life touched others in ways both big and small. His death serves as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be and how violence leaves lasting scars not only on victims, but on families and entire neighborhoods.

The alleged shooter was not present when officers arrived, and no arrests have been announced at this time. As the search for answers continues, law enforcement is urging the public to come forward with any information that may help bring clarity and justice in this case.
