GEM COUNTY, Idaho — The grief felt across Gem County has now taken on a name, a face, and a deeper sense of heartbreak. One of the two men who lost their lives in Tuesday morning’s tragic plane crash near Black Canyon has been identified as Roland Stedem.

Roland’s life was tragically cut short when a small aircraft crashed into the icy Payette River around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27. According to the Gem County Sheriff’s Office, the plane struck a major power line before plunging into the river, triggering a widespread power outage and leaving a community reeling in shock and sorrow.

While the investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, the loss of Roland Stedem has already left a profound impact on those who knew him — and on many who did not, but who understand the weight of a life lost too soon.

In close-knit communities like those throughout Gem County, tragedy is never distant. It ripples outward, touching families, neighbors, coworkers, and friends of friends. As news of Roland’s passing spread, so too did a shared sense of mourning — a quiet ache felt in homes, schools, and gathering places across the region.

Local aviation educator Jim Baker, who visited the scene shortly after the crash, spoke to the emotional toll the incident has taken, especially within the aviation community.

“To have it right in our backyard, it’s a little too close to home for us,” Baker said.

“We have student pilots right now working on their pilot licenses, and unfortunately it’s a reality — it’s a tragedy.”

His words reflect what many are feeling: a mix of sorrow, disbelief, and reflection. For those who love aviation, it is a reminder of both its beauty and its risks. For those who knew Roland, it is the painful reality of losing someone whose journey ended far too soon.

The crash also caused a significant power outage when the aircraft struck a major transmission line, leaving more than 5,300 Idaho Power customers in Crouch, Horseshoe Bend, and Placerville without electricity for several hours. While crews worked tirelessly to restore service, the emotional weight of the incident lingered long after the lights came back on.

First responders from Gem County Fire and Rescue and surrounding agencies were praised for their swift and professional response. Yet even with their dedication, the outcome was one no one could change.

“We’re all in a state of shock,” Baker said. “It’s just tragic.”

Today, the Gem County community pauses to remember Roland Stedem — not just as a victim of a tragic accident, but as a person whose life mattered, whose absence will be deeply felt, and whose memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

As authorities continue their investigation and await the identification of the second victim, the community is asked to keep all affected families in their thoughts and prayers.

May Roland Stedem rest in eternal peace. May his loved ones find comfort in shared memories, in community support, and in knowing that he will not be forgotten. And may Gem County continue to stand together in compassion, remembrance, and healing during this heartbreaking time.
