With profound sadness, we remember and honor the lives of Murray Kenneth Paxton and Emery Thomas Woody, who tragically lost their lives in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 20 in Lexington County, South Carolina. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has positively identified Mr. Paxton, 90, of Lexington, and Mr. Woody, 22, of Augusta, Georgia, as the two individuals who died in the crash that occurred near the 63-mile marker of I-20 westbound in the Columbia area of Lexington County.
The heartbreaking incident took place on the morning of January 24, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m. According to Coroner Fisher, Murray Kenneth Paxton was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-20 when his vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Emery Thomas Woody, who was traveling westbound. The collision was sudden and catastrophic, leaving no opportunity for either driver to escape the devastating outcome.
Mr. Paxton was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while Mr. Woody was not. Despite the efforts of first responders, both men sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. In a matter of moments, two lives from different generations and different paths were forever intertwined by tragedy, leaving behind grieving families, friends, and communities.
