The Springfield community is grieving the loss of Willis King, a longtime public servant and cherished member of the community, who tragically passed away this morning at the age of 57 following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 65. His death marks Springfield’s first fatal traffic crash of 2026, casting a heavy shadow over the city and all who knew him.

Willis King dedicated much of his life to serving others. He proudly served with the Springfield Fire Department for 24 years, retiring in 2018 as a fire equipment operator. Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public safety. Crash Details

According to the Springfield Police Department, officers responded to a three-vehicle collision at approximately 7:54 a.m. on January 20, 2026, in the 1600 block of North U.S. Highway 65.

Investigators reported that Willis King, 57, of Fordland, was traveling northbound in a 2008 Buick LaCrosse when he collided with the rear of a 2014 Dodge Ram driven by Robert Caton, 34, of Nixa. After the initial impact, King’s vehicle left the roadway to the right. The force of the crash caused the Dodge Ram to then strike a 2021 Ford Explorer operated by Alyssa Tapio, 35, of Rogersville.

Willis was transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries. Authorities confirmed that his family has been notified. The events leading up to the crash remain under active investigation.
