Belleville, Illinois –The Belleville community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of a young life taken far too soon. With profound sorrow, we remember Shenandoah Burton, just 18 years old, whose life was tragically cut short in a late-night act of violence that has left family, friends, and an entire community in mourning.
On Saturday, January 17, 2026, at approximately 11:19 p.m., Belleville and Swansea Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots fired in the 1700 block of Jamestown Road. When officers arrived, they discovered three female victims at the scene. Shenandoah Burton was found and pronounced deceased at the scene, a devastating confirmation that forever altered the lives of those who loved her. Two additional victims were located inside a nearby vehicle, one of whom suffered a gunshot wound and was transported for medical care.
Due to the nature and location of the incident, and with multiple jurisdictions involved, the Belleville Police Department assumed responsibility for the investigation. Authorities identified a known acquaintance as the suspect, and a regional BOLO (Be On the Lookout) was promptly issued.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 18, at approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspect vehicle was located by the Perry County Sheriff’s Department in Missouri. Before officers were able to make contact, the suspect died from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
While the investigation has concluded, the pain and heartbreak left behind remain immeasurable.
Shenandoah was more than a name in a police report—she was a daughter, a friend, a loved one, and a young woman with dreams, promise, and a future that should have been filled with opportunity and joy. Her life mattered. Her presence mattered. And her loss leaves a silence that words cannot fully express.
As Belleville mourns, hearts across the community stand with Shenandoah’s family and friends, offering love, prayers, and unwavering support during this unimaginable time. The ripple effects of such a tragedy are far-reaching, touching classmates, neighbors, and all who knew her or knew of her.
We honor Shenandoah Burton by remembering her not for the violence that took her life, but for the life she lived and the love she gave. May her memory be a light to those who grieve, and may her loved ones find strength in the outpouring of compassion surrounding them.
Our deepest condolences go out to all the families and friends affected by this tragic loss.
May Shenandoah Burton rest in eternal peace, forever remembered, forever loved.
